REAL ID: what you need to bring
The federal ID standard, the exact document categories, and why a birth certificate alone is not enough if you changed your name.
REAL ID is the federal standard for state-issued IDs used to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities. A standard license still works for driving; the difference only matters at the airport and the federal building door.
The rule that catches people: every name change between your birth certificate and your current name must be documented. Marriage certificates, divorce decrees, court orders — the whole chain, not just the most recent one.
The four document categories
1. Proof of identity and date of birth (one)
- Certified birth certificate from the issuing agency — a hospital souvenir certificate is not accepted
- Valid US passport or passport card
- Permanent resident card, employment authorization document, or certificate of naturalization
2. Proof of Social Security number (one)
- Social Security card
- W-2 showing the full number
- Pay stub showing the full number
3. Proof of residence (two, showing your current address)
- Utility bill from the last few months
- Bank or credit card statement
- Mortgage, deed or signed lease
- Vehicle registration or insurance policy
4. Proof of name change (all of them, if applicable)
Certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees or court orders linking every name on your documents to the name you use now.
Originals only
Photocopies are rejected across the board. Documents must be originals or certified copies from the issuing agency. Laminated Social Security cards are frequently refused. Bring more than the minimum; an extra proof of residence costs nothing to carry.
Where to go
In Oklahoma, REAL ID is issued at Licensed Operator locations and Service Oklahoma exam sites, and many offer appointments. In Kansas, driver licensing is handled at state driver license offices, and only some county treasurer offices offer license services — check the individual office page before you drive out.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to get one?
No. It is optional. A standard license remains valid for driving, and a passport works for air travel in its place.
Can I do it online?
No. REAL ID requires an in-person visit because the documents must be physically verified and scanned.
Does it expire differently?
No. It follows the normal license cycle, and once your documents are on file a renewal does not require presenting them again.
