What to bring to the tag office
The document checklist by errand: renewal, title transfer, new resident, lost plate, disability placard, boat.
Tag offices process a fixed set of transactions and each one has a document list. Missing a single item means coming back another day, and in a busy county office that is an hour of your life. Check your errand below before you leave.
Bring on every visit: a current government photo ID, proof of insurance for the vehicle, and a payment method the office accepts. Many smaller offices do not take credit cards, or add a processing fee if they do.
Registration renewal
- Renewal notice, or tag number and VIN
- Current proof of insurance
- Photo ID
- Payment
Title transfer, private sale
- Title signed and assigned by the seller (notarized where required)
- Bill of sale with price, date, VIN, both parties
- Odometer disclosure
- Lien release, if the title shows a lienholder
- Proof of insurance in the buyer's name
- Photo ID and payment for title, registration and tax
New resident
- Out-of-state title, or complete lienholder details
- Out-of-state registration
- VIN inspection form (required in Kansas)
- Proof of new-state insurance
- Photo ID and proof of address
Lost plate, decal or registration
- Photo ID
- Tag number or VIN
- Police report, if the plate was stolen
- Replacement fee
Disability placard
- Application form with the medical certification section completed and signed by a licensed provider
- Photo ID
Boat or outboard motor
- Title or manufacturer's statement of origin
- Bill of sale
- Hull identification number
- Photo ID and payment
Going on someone else's behalf
You need a signed power of attorney specific to the vehicle, plus your own photo ID and copies of the owner's ID. For a title transfer, a general "I said it was fine" is not enough — the paperwork must name you.
Payment, checked before you go
Card acceptance varies widely between offices, and privately run Oklahoma tag agencies set their own policies. The office pages on this site list the phone number; a thirty-second call to confirm payment methods and current wait is worth it before a long drive.
